In 1843, a fairy tale garden opened in the heart of Copenhagen. Since then, 274 million people from all over the world have visited the place. After over 150 years, Tivoli is as popular as ever, providing an endless array of concerts, guest entertainers, pantomime theatre, rides and fireworks.
One of the most fascinating sights comes after dusk falls. The colored lights come on at the park in the trees, flowers and the fountains. Unfortunately, fireworks are displayed only on Wednesdays and Saturdays and I missed them. Every year there is a different international theme. For Year 2000, it is Chinese. The person who masterminded Tivoli was George Carstensen. It is said that Tivoli inspired Walt Disney to create Disneyland, which of course has surpassed Tivoli in scale and entertainment value by a huge margin today. Nevertheless, the people of Copenhagen still say that there is no place like Tivoli. And they say the word backward, which spells "I lov' it"! |

Tivoli Gardens
Since its opening in 1843, the world-famous Tivoli Gardens has charmed and delighted more than 280 million visitors from all over the world. Possibly the only amusement park in the world located in the middle of a capital city, Tivoli is, in fact, much more than that. With your map of the park, step into a magical world filled with beautiful fountains, swan-filled ponds and thousands of flowers. There are concerts and various kinds of music performed in the small pavilions. See the famous Pantomime Theater and the open-air Stage Plaenen. |
