BERLIN
GERMANY

After crossing the Kiel Canal, the boat arrived at the German port of Warnemunde at 7 a.m. A private train was chartered to take about 900 people to Berlin, about 2½ hours southeast, for a day tour. Attached is a photograph of me at the Brandenberg Gate, built in 1788 and was the former border between East and West Berlin when Germany was divided. After the fall of the Berlin Wall 10 years ago, the capital city is being vigorously reconstructed, particularly the former East Berlin. The parliament, called the Reichstag, has been under improvement for several years and the project looks monumental and ultra modern.

Berlin's Brandenburg Gate

Excursion:

Berlin - East Meets West (Duration: Approximately 12½ Hours)

Enjoy the lakes and flatland scenery of the scenic Mecklenburg countryside on the 2½-hour train ride to Berlin. You will be served refreshments and provided with general information by English-speaking escorts. In Berlin, now a thoroughly modern city, your motorcoach will pass by the Charlottenburg Palace, a former summer residence of the Prussian kings, and the Schoeneberg Town Hall where John F. Kennedy proclaimed “Ich bin ein Berliner.” Continue past the modern Convention Center to the Airlift Memorial. You will have lunch in the former East Berlin, where the most beautiful and historical buildings are located. Stop for photos at the historic Brandenburg Gate, the former borderline between East and West Berlin. It was built in 1788 as a victory arch for triumphant Prussian armies. Nearby is the Reichstag Parliament, which has been under construction for several years. In Opera Square, you’ll find the famous State Opera, Humboldt University, the National Library and St. Hedwig’s Cathedral. It was in this square that the Nazis burned books in 1933. See famous Checkpoint Charlie, the old border checkpoint, and Checkpoint Charlie Museum. After a brief introduction by your guide, you can visit the museum at your leisure. Take a short walk to the Gendarmenmarkt with its historic Concert Hall surrounded by twin French and German cathedrals, and continue to the Berlin Cathedral. No tour would be complete without a stop at the East Side Gallery; where you can see remnants of the infamous wall that once separated East and West Germany. After this thoroughly fascinating day, you will reboard the train for the return trip to Warnemunde. Relax with a refreshment before returning to the ship in time for a late on-board dinner.
